CCTV Installation and Configuration

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course trains participants to design, install, configure and maintain CCTV surveillance systems. It covers the fundamentals of electricity and electronics, networking, IP camera technology, DVR/NVR setup and system design, giving participants the practical skills to work as competent CCTV installers.

PRE-COURSE REQUIREMENTS & TARGET GROUP

The course suits school leavers with science background, OND/HND holders in computer science or engineering related courses and working technicians looking to enter or formalise their skills in the security systems trade. No prior CCTV experience is needed.

COURSE DURATION

6 weeks (30 days). Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. Class size: 12 participants.

MODE OF DELIVERY

  • Classroom instruction using lesson notes, PowerPoint slides, projector and whiteboard

  • Practical hands-on sessions with real CCTV equipment, tools and test instruments

  • Video demonstrations, case studies and group discussions

  • Individual and group assignments after each topic

  • Practical and theory exams in the final week

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants who complete the course will be able to:

  1. Apply health and safety practices, fire safety and first aid procedures on site

  2. Understand the fundamentals of electricity, electronics and networking as they apply to CCTV systems

  3. Identify and correctly use cables, connectors, tools and test instruments for CCTV installations

  4. Explain how IP cameras, DVRs and NVRs work, and identify the differences between them

  5. Design a CCTV system by assessing customer requirements, conducting a site survey and selecting appropriate equipment

  6. Install dome, box and PTZ cameras and connect them to a DVR or NVR

  7. Configure network settings, IP addresses, OSD, HDD management and remote access on a DVR/NVR

  8. Identify and resolve common network and system faults

COURSE CONTENT

  • HSE foundations — workplace hazards, fire safety, first aid, waste management, health and hygiene

  • Employability skills — communication, workplace discipline, gender sensitivity, entrepreneurship and personal branding

  • Technical foundations — electricity, electronics, cables and connectors, networking, TCP/IP, tools and CCTV system overview

  • System design — customer needs assessment, site analysis, equipment selection (IP cameras, sensors, DVR/NVR, power supply), layout drawing and installation planning

  • Configuration and networking — DVR/NVR setup, on-screen display, HDD management, Hikvision NVR, network addresses, bandwidth and network troubleshooting

ASSESSMENT

  • Continuous assessment: weekly assignments and practical demonstrations

  • Practical exam: full CCTV system installation and configuration observed by assessor

  • Theory exam: written paper covering all course topics

CERTIFICATE

On successful completion participants will be awarded the ETIWA Certificate of Achievement
