Block Laying
Course Description
This course equips trainees with the basic building skills required to construct walls from various size concrete blocks; to do so accurately and to a European standard.
Pre-Course Requirements & Target group
Trainees within age group 18 years and above that possess a minimum of 4 credits (including maths, English) at SSCE level. Suitable for people employed in the block laying trade and who require up skilling.
Course Duration
The course is 5 weeks and has a contact period of 400 hours, Monday – Friday: (8:00am – 5:00pm) with a class size of 12.
Mode of Delivery:
Each trainee will be issued with a comprehensive training manual, as well as, hand tools and power tools required to do all practical tasks
Classroom Presentation - using PowerPoint and Visual Aids
Practical hands on Sessions
Use of audio/videos to demonstrate current industry practices
One-to-one instruction and team-building exercises in groups
Discussion and feedback from participants during each topic forms an important element of the learning process
Learning Objectives
On successful completion of this course each trainee will have a comprehensive understanding of the following:
Health and safety and being aware of the dangers of working on site.
Will be familiar and would have worked with all the hand tool associated with block laying using the European method.
Be confidently able to read a metric measuring tape and use spirit levels to find the vertical and horizontal planes.
Accurately mix the components to make a suitable mortar mix.
Be competently able to cut and lay concrete blocks.
Lay blocks plumb and horizontal and to a set tolerance.
Be able to estimate quantities of materials required to do a task.
Have all the theoretical knowledge to support all the above mentioned tasks.
COURSE CONTENT/TOPICS
Understand health and safety
Identification of hand tools, care and maintenance of tools and their correct use
Block laying techniques and terminology used within the trade
Marking out using 3,4,5 method, diagonals and interpreting building drawings
Types of sand and silt tests, assessing the quality of sand
Assessment
This course is assessed through a multiple-choice examination, as well as a competency based practical examination.
Certificate
On successful completion of this course, learners will receive a certificate accredited by the CPD Certificate Service, a UK accrediting body.
