Domestic Wiring

Course Description

The Domestic Wiring training provides participants with a solid foundation in domestic electrical wiring design and installation practices. This course will equip trainees with the knowledge and skills required to competently complete a domestic electrical installation.

Pre-Course Requirements & Target group

Trainees within age group 18 years and above that possess a minimum of 4 credits (including mathematics, English) at SSCE level. OND/HND holders and Engineering graduates requiring technical knowledge within the electrical trade.

Course Duration

The course is 4 weeks and has a contact period of 160 hours, Monday – Friday: (8:00am – 5:00pm) with a class size of 12.

Mode of Delivery

  • Each trainee will be issued with a comprehensive training manual, as well as, hand tools and power tools required to do all practical

  • Classroom Presentation - using PowerPoint and Visual Aids Practical hands on Sessions

  • Use of audio/videos to demonstrate current industry practices

  • One-to-one instruction and team-building exercises in groups

  • Discussion and feedback from participants during each topic forms an important element of the learning process

COURSE CONTENT/TOPICS

On successful completion of this course each trainee will have a comprehensive understanding of the following:

  1. Identification of specialized hand tools and relevant electrical symbols

  2. Be able to read and interpret an electrical drawing, as well as wire various plug tops

  3. Recognize electrical conductors and insulators, how to size conductors

  4. Understand Ohs Law, resistors in series and parallel, circuit isolation, control and protection

  5. Understand how MCBs, RCs and RCBOs operate, as well as wire a domestic type distribution board Install domestic smoke detectors, cooker and water heater circuits.

  6. Carry out inspection and testing Install various lighting circuits, 1 way, 2 way and intermediate.

  7. To wire using different methods 

Learning Objectives

On successful completion of this course each trainee will have a comprehensive understanding of the following:

  • Health and safety and being aware of the dangers of working on site.

  • Will be familiar and would have worked with all the hand tools and power tools associated with a domestic installation, including electrical testing equipment such as continuity and insulation resistance testers.

  • Be competently able to install a domestic type distribution board and associated protective devices.

  • Understand and install all the different types of domestic circuits.

  • Correctly size all the protective devices and install an earthing system.

Assessment

This course is assessed through a multiple-choice examination, as well as a competency based practical examination

Certification

On successful completion of this course, learners will receive a certificate accredited by the CPD Certificate Service, a UK accrediting body
